In the distant past of Darkeden Awaken, when the shadows of vampires stretched long over the lands of northern Eslania, a small city named Castalo fell under their cruel dominion. The people of Castalo, mere mortals, were reduced to nothing more than cattle for the bloodthirsty lords of the night. It was during this dark period in the 15th century that the Sorceress Karisas, a woman of formidable power and compassion, took pity on these poor souls. With her magic, she sought to save them from their torment. But salvation came at a price.
"Lady Karisas turned the poor victims of vampiric feeding into `half vampires`." These creatures, neither completely human nor fully monstrous, were called the Ousters. Yet, for all their gained strength and abilities, they found themselves shunned by both humans and vampires. "Though they despised vampires, they could not coexist with humans either, and fate forced them to move on and establish an independent home." The revelation of God led Karisas south with the Ousters, destined to change their lives forever.
"Lady Karisas led the few survivors and headed south according to the revelation given to her." Their journey brought them to the entrance of the Holyland of Adam, a holy place whispered of in the ancient prophecies; it was sealed, the secrets beyond even for the great Karisas. "Her revelation led our race to the entrance to the Holyland of Adam." Though they couldn`t break the seal, they could feel the immense power lying within, power that might tilt the balance in favor of the warring factions. Knowing this power may fall into the wrong hands, the Ousters took up guarding this holy site, even their numbers dwindling.
In time, the race of Ousters, once thriving, faced extinction. Only four survived with Karisas, and all hope seemed lost. Yet, in their darkest hour, a miracle occurred. Lavinia, the only female among them, gave birth to twins, "and we are their direct descendants." These twins were unlike any Ousters before them, for they bore no gender, embodying a perfect balance of nature`s forces. "While they showed incredible power and strength, even more so than the previous generation," they laid eggs known as germins, from which new life would emerge, rekindling the race that was on the verge of vanishing.
Yet, even this miracle could not postpone the unavoidable outcome. "Lady Karisas summoned her last force and placed an invisible seal around the Ousters` village to set it, along with her own soul, into a hibernation mode." The Ousters rested for 500 years while their village had been hidden from the outside world until such time when their service would be required once again.
That day arrived when the vampires once more cast their dark pall over Eslania and the Holyland of Adam was breached. "500 years later, vampires again dominate Eslania, and the Holyland of Adam has finally opened up. This has caused the spirit of Lady Karisas to wake and the entire Ousters village with her." Finding themselves reawakened in a world much different from their own, the Ousters were once again at the front lines of a new war that would decide the fate of Eslania and beyond.
With Lavinia now as the vessel for the spirit of Karisas, the Ousters rose from their slumber. "The spirit of Lady Karisas, with Lavinia as her host, has taken a heavy step forward in driving out the vampires from this land." Now, guided by the teachings of their founder, the Ousters march to reclaim their home and fulfill their destiny, "holding the secret to defeating the vampire masters" that threaten to plunge the world into eternal darkness.
